SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown at Saint John’s sitting at 6-8 overall through the first 14 games of the 2023 season, including a 2-0 showing in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals limited St. Scholastica to just two runs in both games of their conference-opening doubleheader on Monday — while plating 15 runs of their own — as SMU swept the Saints 6-2 and 9-2 at Max Molock Field.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Cardinals boast four regulars who are hitting above .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 14-for-35 for a team-leading .400 batting average. Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis. / .373), Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis. / .327), and Patrick Schork (Janesville, Wis. / .333) are also sporting batting averages north of .300. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is hitting .264 (112-for-424).
• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals have plated 68 runs in 14 games thus far this season. Riley Bauman has scored a team-leading 11 runs, one more than Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.), followed by Coyle (8), Daniel Marxen (7), and Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn. / 7). … Coyle and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.
• HIT PARADE: Riley Bauman and Weber lead the team in hits with 19 and 17, respectively, with Coyle (14), VanEgtern (12), and Merfeld (11) also reaching double figures in hits through 16 games. … Riley Bauman has collected a team-best seven multiple-hit games, one more than Weber. … Coyle owns two of SMU’s three, three-hit games, with Marxen accounting for the other.
• MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.) made the most of his first collegiate at-bat, delivering a pinch-hit double in the Cardinals 3-1 win over Northwestern on March 22. … Sherman is the second Cardinal to collect his first collegiate hit this season, being joined by Schork, who belted his first hit in an SMU uniform against MSOE on Feb. 27.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 112 hits in its first 14 games, including 25 for extra bases — 18 doubles, one triple, and six home runs. … Schork and Tanner Bauman share the team lead in doubles with three, one more than Riley Bauman, Marxen, and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.). … Coyle owns the team’s lone triple, hitting a three-bagger against Russell Sage on March 4.
• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago — led by VanEgtern and Marxen with four HRs each — SMU has hit six round-trippers this season. • DRIVING ‘EM IN: Coyle and Riley Bauman share the team lead in RBIs with nine each, one more than Tanner Bauman, with Marxen sitting with six RBIs. … Tanner Bauman and Coyle have recorded three multiple-RBI games this season, one more than Marxen, Miller, VanEgtern, and Riley Bauman. … SMU has yet to have a player drive in more than three runs in a game this season. … Jack Arndt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) delivered a career-high five RBIs in Saint Mary’s 9-7 win over Grove City on Feb. 28, 2022.
• STREAKING ALONG: Riley Bauman owns the team’s longest hitting streak at eight games, but Boeckman sports the team’s longest active hit streak at four games. … Merfeld has reached base safely in 13 consecutive games, while Riley Bauman have reached safely in 12 and 11 straight contests, respectively.
• OUCH: The Cardinals have been hit by a pitch 14 times in 14 games, led by Weber, who has been beaned three times. … Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.

• PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott collected his second save of the season against St. Scholastica on Monday, while Charest and Stomberg each own one save. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 73 batters in 14 games, led by Hochevar with 22, Smith with 17, and Fischer with 12. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22. … Hochevar matched his career-high with nine strikeouts in the Cardinals’ 1-0, Game 2 loss to Franklin on Feb. 27. It was the third time in his collegiate career that Hochevar has fanned nine batters. … Hochevar led the Cardinals in strikeouts with 60 a year ago.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 68 runs in 14 games, including a season-high nine runs three. SMU has plated nine runs in beating St. Scholastica (9-2) and Russell Sage (9-6), while falling to Aurora (13-9). Saint Mary’s is 6-4 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-4) when being held under three runs. • FOR THE RECORD: The Johnnies head into their conference-opening doubleheader against Saint Mary’s sitting at 9-8 through their first 17 games of the 2023 season.
• LAST ACTION: Saint John’s has been off since March 25, when they erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning and held off a late Crown rally to beat the Storm 12-9 at Becker Park in Collegeville, Minn.
• ON A ROLL: The Johnnies head into their showdown against Saint Mary’s having won four straight — beating Redlands (12-87), Oberlin (12-2, 10-4), and Crown (12-9). SJU has not lost since dropping a 17-7 decision to Concordia (Wis.) on March 19.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: As a team, the Johnnies are hitting .291 through 17 games and boast five players who are hitting above .300. Max Nyrop leads the way for SJU, going 26-for-59 for a team-best .441 batting average, while Joe Becker (.394), Owen Best (.326), Matt Herold (.313), and Andrew Mahlke (.303) are also hitting above .300.
