SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:

• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against St. Olaf sitting at 6-10 overall through the first 16 games of the 2023 season, including a 2-2 showing in conference play.

• LAST ACTION: Saint John’s belted a pair of grand slam home runs – one in each game — as the Johnnies dealt the Cardinals a pair of MIAC losses, beating SMU 6-0 and 10-3 Friday at Becker Park in Collegeville, Minn.

• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Cardinals boast four regulars who are hitting above .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 15-for-40 for a team-leading .375 batting average. Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis. / .328), Patrick Schork (Janesville, Minn. / .308), and Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis. / .305) are also sporting batting averages north of .300. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is hitting .257 (125-for-486).

• ON THE RUN: The Cardinals have plated 71 runs in 16 games thus far this season. Riley Bauman has scored a team-leading 11 runs, one more than Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.), followed by Coyle (9), Daniel Marxen (Maple Grove, Minn. / 7), and Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn. / 7). … Coyle and Brandon Merfeld (La Crosse, Wis.) each scored a career-high four runs in a game a year ago — Merfeld’s coming against Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022, while Coyle achieved the feat against Carleton on May 8, 2022.

• HIT PARADE: Riley Bauman and Weber lead the team in hits with 19 and 18, respectively, with VanEgtern (16), Coyle (15), Merfeld (14), and Tanner Bauman (Willmar, Minn. / 10) also reaching double figures in hits through 16 games. … Riley Bauman has collected a team-best seven multiple-hit games, one more than Weber. … Coyle owns two of SMU’s three, three-hit games, with Marxen and VanEgtern accounting for the other.

• MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.) made the most of his first collegiate at-bat, delivering a pinch-hit double in the Cardinals 3-1 win over Northwestern on March 22. … Sherman is the second Cardinal to collect his first collegiate hit this season, being joined by Schork, who belted his first hit in an SMU uniform against MSOE on Feb. 27.

• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 125 hits in its first 16 games, including 27 for extra bases — 19 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs. … Schork and Tanner Bauman share the team lead in doubles with three, one more than Riley Bauman, Merfeld, Marxen, and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.). … Coyle owns the team’s lone triple, hitting a three-bagger against Russell Sage on March 4.

• BOMBS AWAY: After belting 15 home runs a year ago — led by VanEgtern and Marxen with four HRs each — SMU has hit seven round-trippers this season. Riley Bauman leads the team with three home runs, one more than Coyle, with VanEgtern and Marxen launching the other three. … Bauman’s first home run of the season against Franklin on Feb. 26 was the first of his collegiate career. … All seven SMU home run hitters a year ago belted their first career HRs in 2022.

• DRIVING ‘EM IN: Coyle owns the team lead in RBIs with 10, with Riley Bauman sitting second with nine RBIs, one more than Tanner Bauman. … Tanner Bauman and Coyle have recorded three multiple-RBI games this season, one more than Marxen, Miller, VanEgtern, and Riley Bauman. … SMU has yet to have a player drive in more than three runs in a game this season. … Jack Arndt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) delivered a career-high five RBIs in Saint Mary’s 9-7 win over Grove City on Feb. 28, 2022.

• STREAKING ALONG: Riley Bauman owns the team’s longest hitting streak at eight games, but Boeckman sports the team’s longest active hit streak at five games. …  Merfeld has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games, while Coyle has reached safely in 13 straight contests.

• OUCH: The Cardinals have been hit by a pitch 16 times in 16 games, led by Weber, who has been beaned four times. … Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.

• CATCH ME IF YOU CAN: Saint Mary’s has stolen 41 bases on 46 attempts through 16 games, led by Weber (10-for-11), Tanner Bauman (7-7), Riley Bauman (5-for-5), and Cam Miller (Kimberly, Minn. / 5-for-6). SMU has gotten at least one stolen base from 11 different players.

• PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27. … Fischer tossed his first collegiate complete game in Friday’s 6-0, Game 1 loss to Saint John’s.

• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott collected his second save of the season against St. Scholastica on Monday, while Charest and Stomberg each own one save. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.

• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 78 batters in 16 games, led by Hochevar with 22, Smith with 17, and Fischer with 15. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22. … Hochevar matched his career-high with nine strikeouts in the Cardinals’ 1-0, Game 2 loss to Franklin on Feb. 27. It was the third time in his collegiate career that Hochevar has fanned nine batters. … Hochevar led the Cardinals in strikeouts with 60 a year ago.

• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 71 runs in 16 games, including a season-high nine runs three times. SMU has plated nine runs in beating St. Scholastica (9-2) and Russell Sage (9-6), while falling to Aurora (13-9). Saint Mary’s is 6-5 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-5) when being held under three runs. On the flip side, SMU has allowed six runs or more in seven of its 10 losses, including a season-high 13 runs in its 13-9 loss to Aurora on March 21. … The Cardinals are 6-1 when leading or tied after the sixth inning, but are still searching for their first win (0-7) when trailing heading to the seventh. …  Saint Mary’s, which scored four or more runs in an inning eight times last season — including a seven-run fourth inning against Hamline on April 19, 2022 and a season-high eight-run second inning in its 16-7 win over Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 — owns two four-run innings this season.

• FOR THE RECORD: St. Olaf heads into its conference showdown against Saint Mary’s owning a 4-7 overall record through its first 11 games of the season.

• LAST TIME OUT: The Oles have been off since March 29, when they closed out their eight-game spring trip schedule with a 10-3 victory over 25th-ranked Augustana in Winter Haven, Fla.

• FAMILIAR FOES: St. Olaf’s eight-game stay in Winter Haven, Fla., saw the Oles play four different opponents. STO played two games against St. Lawrence (W, 7-1; L, 6-1), two vs. Colby (L, 3-2; L, 9-3), one against Kalamazoo (L, 13-7), and three against Augustana (L, 8-5; L, 16-6; W, 10-3).

• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s games at Saint Mary’s mark the 12th and 13th straight road contests for the Oles, who will play their next four games on their home diamond, facing Hamline and UW-La Crosse in doubleheaders on Monday and Thursday, respectively.

• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Oles boast a team batting average of .269 and boast five players who are hitting above .300. Breckin Hadley has gone 10-for-25 en route to a team-best .400 batting average, with Frank Lavin (.375), Evan Hammonds (.372), Jack Alley (.344), and Sam Lavin (.310) also sporting averages above .300.
