SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference showdown against St. Olaf sitting at 6-10 overall through the first 16 games of the 2023 season, including a 2-2 showing in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Saint John’s belted a pair of grand slam home runs – one in each game — as the Johnnies dealt the Cardinals a pair of MIAC losses, beating SMU 6-0 and 10-3 Friday at Becker Park in Collegeville, Minn.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Cardinals boast four regulars who are hitting above .300 this season, led by Mason Coyle (Madison, Wis.), who has gone 15-for-40 for a team-leading .375 batting average. Riley Bauman (Stratford, Wis. / .328), Patrick Schork (Janesville, Minn. / .308), and Cameron Weber (Holmen, Wis. / .305) are also sporting batting averages north of .300. … As a team, Saint Mary’s is hitting .257 (125-for-486).

• MAKING AN IMPRESSION: Daniel Sherman (Richfield, Minn.) made the most of his first collegiate at-bat, delivering a pinch-hit double in the Cardinals 3-1 win over Northwestern on March 22. … Sherman is the second Cardinal to collect his first collegiate hit this season, being joined by Schork, who belted his first hit in an SMU uniform against MSOE on Feb. 27.
• EXTRA, EXTRA: Saint Mary’s has collected 125 hits in its first 16 games, including 27 for extra bases — 19 doubles, one triple, and seven home runs. … Schork and Tanner Bauman share the team lead in doubles with three, one more than Riley Bauman, Merfeld, Marxen, and Will Boeckman (Big Lake, Minn.). … Coyle owns the team’s lone triple, hitting a three-bagger against Russell Sage on March 4.

• STREAKING ALONG: Riley Bauman owns the team’s longest hitting streak at eight games, but Boeckman sports the team’s longest active hit streak at five games. … Merfeld has reached base safely in 15 consecutive games, while Coyle has reached safely in 13 straight contests.
• OUCH: The Cardinals have been hit by a pitch 16 times in 16 games, led by Weber, who has been beaned four times. … Saint Mary’s had two games in 2022 — vs. Rose-Hulman on March 3, 2022 and vs. Carleton on May 8, 2022 — in which five Cardinals were hit by a pitch. … Individually, SMU had a player hit by a pitch twice in a game five times.

• PITCHING FIRSTS: Smith tossed his first collegiate nine-inning complete game against Northwestern on March 22, holding the Eagles to one run on five hits in a 3-1 SMU victory. … Eric Charest (Blaine, Minn. / 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 6.0 IP) picked up his first collegiate pitching win against Calvin on March 2, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in five innings of SMU’s 8-2 win over the Knights. The freshman right-hander collected his first save in a Cardinal uniform with one inning of scoreless relief in SMU’s 3-2 win over MSOE on Feb. 27. … Fischer tossed his first collegiate complete game in Friday’s 6-0, Game 1 loss to Saint John’s.
• SAVING THE DAY: Westcott collected his second save of the season against St. Scholastica on Monday, while Charest and Stomberg each own one save. … Fischer closed out the 2022 season as team’s saves leader with six, one more than Westcott.
• FANNING THE FLAMES: The SMU pitching staff has struck out 78 batters in 16 games, led by Hochevar with 22, Smith with 17, and Fischer with 15. … Smith struck out a career-high eight batters against Northwestern on March 22. … Hochevar matched his career-high with nine strikeouts in the Cardinals’ 1-0, Game 2 loss to Franklin on Feb. 27. It was the third time in his collegiate career that Hochevar has fanned nine batters. … Hochevar led the Cardinals in strikeouts with 60 a year ago.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored 71 runs in 16 games, including a season-high nine runs three times. SMU has plated nine runs in beating St. Scholastica (9-2) and Russell Sage (9-6), while falling to Aurora (13-9). Saint Mary’s is 6-5 when scoring at least three runs, but winless (0-5) when being held under three runs. • FOR THE RECORD: St. Olaf heads into its conference showdown against Saint Mary’s owning a 4-7 overall record through its first 11 games of the season.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Oles have been off since March 29, when they closed out their eight-game spring trip schedule with a 10-3 victory over 25th-ranked Augustana in Winter Haven, Fla.
• FAMILIAR FOES: St. Olaf’s eight-game stay in Winter Haven, Fla., saw the Oles play four different opponents. STO played two games against St. Lawrence (W, 7-1; L, 6-1), two vs. Colby (L, 3-2; L, 9-3), one against Kalamazoo (L, 13-7), and three against Augustana (L, 8-5; L, 16-6; W, 10-3).
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saturday’s games at Saint Mary’s mark the 12th and 13th straight road contests for the Oles, who will play their next four games on their home diamond, facing Hamline and UW-La Crosse in doubleheaders on Monday and Thursday, respectively.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: The Oles boast a team batting average of .269 and boast five players who are hitting above .300.
