WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Saint Benedict Saturday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field searching for its first conference win of the young season.
Â
And Saint Benedict refused to cooperate — leaving the Cardinals still searching.
Â
The Bennies scored the game's only goal in the 76th minute in dealing the Cardinals a 1-0 setback — and handing SMU its third conference loss of the season.
Â
The two teams battled to a scoreless deadlock through the game's opening 45 minutes, with CSB holding an 8-2 edge in shots — including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
It appeared as if the two teams were headed for a scoreless draw, until Alli Voss broke free and delivered a shot into the lower-righthand cover, beating SMU goalkeeper
Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) — and giving the Bennies the lead for good.
Â
Peckosh closed out the game with three saves for the Cardinals, while CSB goalkeeper Annie Waters stopped both SMU shots in recording the shutout.
Â
The Cardinals (0-3-0 MIAC, 3-4-0 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, when they travel to Menomonie, Wis., for a 3 p.m. nonconference matchup against UW-Stout.
