MENOMONIE, Wis. — Playing a game decided by shutout is nothing new to the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.
Â
In fact, the Cardinals had played in six such contests heading into Sunday's nonconference game at UW-Stout.
Â
Make that seven.
Â
And thanks to the Munson twins, the Cardinals came out on the winning end of that shutout decision.
Â
McKenzie Munson (Plain City, Utah) stopped both shots she faced and sister
Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) scored midway through the first half in leading the Cardinals to a 1-0 nonconference win over the Blue Devils.
Â
Samantha Munson gave the Cardinals all the offense they would need, scoring her this goal of the season in the 29th minute. And from there, the SMU defense — led by
McKenzie Munson — did the rest, limiting UW-Stout to just two shots on goal.
Â
McKenzie Munson, making her second collegiate start in goal, stopped both UW-Stout shots en route to her second collegiate shutout, while Blue Devils' goalkeeper Kristen Silenzi stopped eight of SMU's nine shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals (4-4-0 overall) return to conference play on Wednesday, when they travel to St. Peter, Minn., for a 4 p.m. MIAC showdown against Gustavus.
