ST. PETER, Minn. — After scoring in the first 10 minutes in four of their first eight games this season, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team took a different approach Wednesday afternoon against Gustavus — scoring the game's first goal with just 10 seconds remaining until halftime.
Â
Unfortunately, the Gusties took a page from the Cardinals' first-half playbook after the intermission — twice — as GAC netted a pair of goals three minutes apart with less than 12 minutes to play in regulation in dealing Saint Mary's a 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Gustie Soccer Field.
Â
Sadie Chrusciel (Geneva, Ill.) got the Cardinals on the board right before the halftime intermission, taking a cross from
Kaylen Pray (Port Townsend, Wash.) and beating Gustavus goalkeeper Katelyn Olson for her first collegiate goal — and a 1-0 Saint Mary's advantage.
Â
The Cardinals clung to that one-goal lead for most of the second half, only to have the Gusties strike with 11:35 to play on a goal by Cambelle Waldspurger. And, less than three minutes later, Hannah Cisar found the back of the net for the third time this season to give Gustavus the lead for good.
Â
SMU goalkeeper
Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) finished with three saves in goal for Saint Mary's, while XXX stopped six of the Cardinals' seven shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals (0-4-0 MIAC, 4-5-0 overall) are back in action on Saturday, when they return home to Ochrymowycz Field for a 3:30 p.m. conference matchup against Concordia.
