SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their mid-week conference showdown against Gustavus sitting at 4-4-0 overall, including an 0-3-0 start to the conference schedule.
• LAST TIME OUT: Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) scored the game’s only goal and sister McKenzie Munson (Plain City, Utah) stopped both shots she faced, as the sister duo led the Cardinals to a 1-0 win over UW-Stout Sunday in Menomonie, Wis.
• FAST STARTS: The Cardinals have scored a goal before the eight-minute mark in four of their eight games this season. Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored at 7:09 against UMN Morris on Sept. 1, Laura Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) needed just 2:55 to put SMU out front against Wartburg on Sept. 3, Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) found the back of the net 7:52 into the first half against Beloit on Sept. 5, and Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) scored at 2:19 of the first half vs. Lawrence four days later.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: The Cardinals, who went 6-1-2 in their eight home games last season, have collected all four of their wins this season on the road. SMU is 4-1-0 in four road contests, while sitting at 0-3-0 at Ochrymowycz Field.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Twenty-one of Saint Mary’s last 27 games have been decided by shutout — including 13 of SMU’s last 15 wins. … All four of SMU’s victories this season have been by shutout — 6-0 over UMN Morris, and 1-0 over Beloit, Lawrence, and UW-Stout. … All told, seven of SMU’s eight games this season have been decided by shutout.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s 10 goals this season have come from eight different players, led by Samantha Munson, who has netted a team-best three goals. Capacio, Lahart, Ashe, Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.), Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Hannah Bradley (Portland, Ore.), and Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) own SMU’s other seven goals.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Bradley netted her first collegiate goal in SMU’s 6-0 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 1, while Ashe’s first-half tally against Wartburg two days later was her first as a Cardinal. Saint Mary’s had five players record their first collegiate goals a year ago.
• CAREER FIRST II: Samantha Munson collected her first collegiate multiple-point game, scoring once and assisting on two others for a four-point effort in SMU’s 6-0 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 1.
• LENDING A HAND: Samantha Munson and Peyton Maier (Elk River, Minn.) share the team lead with three assists each, while Lahart, Ashe, McKinney, Leonard, and Anna Warneke (Maple Grove, Minn.) have all collected one helper..
• POINT PRODUCER: Samantha Munson sits atop the team’s points race with nine (3 G, 3 A), followed by Ashe (1 G, 1 A), Leonard (1 G, 1 A), McKinney (1 G, 1 A), Lahart (1 G, 1 A), and Maier (3 A) with three, and Bradley, Skoruppa, and Capacio with two each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has started six of the Cardinals’ eight games in goal, compiling a 1.07 goals-against-average and a .769 save percentage. McKenzie Munson owns SMU’s other starts — a one-save shutout on Sept. 5 against Beloit and a two-save shutout against UW-Stout last Sunday — while Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) has made one save in 36:13 minutes of work. … Peckosh has made 20 saves in six games.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: McKenzie Munson recorded her first collegiate win and first career shutout — in her first collegiate start, a 1-0 win over Beloit on Sept. 5. … Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16, 2022. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, 2022, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, 2022, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21, 2022 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has seven of its 10 goals this season in the first half. … Saint Mary’s has allowed just six goals in eight games — three in each half. … SMU has outshot its opponents 124-77, including 60-30 in shots on goal. … SMU’s six goals against the Cougars on Sept. 1 are the most since SMU poured in 11 goals against Martin Luther on Sept. 6, 2021.
GUSTAVUS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Gusties head into their mid-week conference showdown against Saint Mary’s boasting a .500 overall record (4-4-0), including a 1-2-0 showing through three conference games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Gustavus picked up its first MIAC win of the season on the road last Saturday, scoring with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation to beat Hamline 2-1.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Wednesday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s is the third of five home contests in a seven-game span for the Gusties, who are 1-2-0 on their home field, while going 3-2-0 on the road.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: Last Saturday’s 2-1 win over Hamline snapped the Gusties’ season-high three-game losing streak. GAC had opened the season 3-1-0 in its first four games, before falling to Carleton (3-1), Macalester (1-0) and the University of Dubuque (4-2) in a five-day span from Sept. 12-17.
• SHE SHOOTS AND SCORES: Gustavus’ 14 goals this season have come from nine different players, with Ellen Becken, Annika Lewis, Gabriela Rodriguez, Lillian Selberg, and Hannah Cisar all leading the way with two goals each. Jordan Oelkers, Kaitlyn Brandt, Makenna Huetten, and Callie Patraw have accounted for GAC’s other four goals. … Cisar is the team’s only multiple-goal scorer, netting both of her goals against Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 6.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Payton Mahady and Cambelle Waldspurger lead the team with a pair of assists each, with Becken, Lewis, Rodriguez, Selberg, Oelkers, Grace Dlouhy, and Alexis Lin all chipping in one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: Becken (2 G, 1 A), Lewis (2 G, 1 A), Selberg (2 G, 1 A), and Rodriguez (2 G, 1A) sit atop the team’s points lead with five points each. Cisar (2 G) is one point back with four, with Oelkers (1 G, 1 A) next up with three points.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Claire Hemstock and Katelyn Olson have shared the goalkeeping duties this season. Olson has compiled a 0.84 goals-against-average and .824 save percentage in five appearances (322:22 minutes), while Hemstock owns a 2.72 GAA and .647 save % in her five games played (397:38 minutes). … Hemstock leads the team with 22 saves, eight more than Olson. … Hemstock made a single-game season-high seven saves against Carleton on Sept. 12.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Gustavus holds a 113-91 edge in shots through eight games, including a 75-51 edge in shots on goal. … The Gusties have scored nine of their 14 goals this season in the second half. GAC’s opponents, meanwhile, have netted eight goals in the first half and seven after the break. … The Gusties set season-highs in goals (4), assists (5), and points (13) against Bethany Lutheran on Sept. 6. On the flip side, GAC surrendered a season-high four goals in a 4-1 loss to the University of Dubuque on Sept. 17.
