WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University and Concordia women's soccer teams have combined to play 14 of 17 games decided by shutout this season.
Â
So it should come as no surprise that Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest ended with one team failing to score a goal.
Â
And, fortunately, for the Cardinals, that team was Concordia.
Â
Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) netted the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the 77th minute, as the Cardinals snapped a four-game conference losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Cobbers at Ochrymowycz Field.
Â
After battling to a scoreless draw for nearly 73 minutes, it appeared as if the Cardinals and Cobbers were on their way to a 0-0 deadlock. Leonard, however, had other ideas, as the Cardinal junior cashed in on SMU's first penalty kick of the season to give Saint Mary's all the offense it would need.
Â
Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Mackenzie Munson (Plain City, Utah) combined to stop all five Cobber shots in recording the shutout. Peckosh made two saves in the first half, while Munson kicked out all three shots she faced after the break.
Â
The Cardinals (1-4-0 MIAC, 5-5-0 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, when they welcome UW-Stevens Point to Ochrymowycz Field for a 3:30 p.m. nonconference game.
