GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team kicked off Day 2 of its Green Bay excursion in much the same fashion as Day 1 — with a victory.
Â
The Cardinals, coming off a 7-2 victory over Lawrence Friday afternoon, racking up win No. 2 of its three-match stay at the Green Bay Tennis Center with a 6-3 victory over Ripon — picking up wins in four of the six singles matches to seal the win.
Â
Unfortunately, the day didn't end quite as favorably for the Cardinals, who ended their three-day weekend excursion with a 7-2 nonconference loss to St. Norbert later in the day on Saturday.
Â
"It was a solid day for us," said Saint Mary's men's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg. "The guys played very well (against Ripon) and battled hard against St. Norbert, we just ran out of gas."
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles — getting 8-4 wins over
Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) at No. 2 and
Philip Apel (North Oaks, Minn.) and
Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) at No. 3, while
Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.) and
Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) lost by the same count at No. 1.
Â
Raabolle, Besek,
Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) and
Zak Farley () then iced the nonconference win with straight-set wins in singles play.
Â
The Cardinals were not able to get off to their traditional fast start against St. Norbert, falling in two of the three doubles matches. Huemoeller and Rodning picked up SMU's lone doubles win with a marathon 8-7 victory at No. 1.
Â
SMU dropped the first set in five of the six singles matches against the Green Knights, with only Smiley coming away with a victory, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. SNC, meanwhile, completed straight-set wins in the other five singles matches to seal the victory.
Â
The Cardinals (3-4 overall) are back in action with a pair of matches next weekend, heading to Owatonna, Minn., for a nonconference match against Crown, before returning home to the Winona Tennis Center for a Minensota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Gustavus.
