WINONA, Minn. — The day started out rather unceremoniously for Saint Mary's University pitcher
Addison Hochevar, as the Cardinals' starting pitcher surrendered a one-out single in the top of the first inning in last Saturday's conference-opener against Hamline.
Â
From there, however, unceremoniously morphed into other-worldly.
Â
That one-out first-inning single would the only hit Hochevar would allow, as the senior left-hander tossed a complete-game shutout in leading SMU to a 1-0 victory in the opening game of SMU's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of Hamline.
Â
And Monday afternoon, Hochevar was recognized for his efforts, being named MIAC Pitcher of the Week, when the league office unveiled its weekly winners.
Â
Hochevar was in complete control the entire way against the Pipers, allowing just five base runners in the seven-inning outing — his third career complete-game performance. He struck out one and walked one, and did not allow a Piper past second base in picking up his first win of the season.
Â
With the one-hit gem, Hochevar — who has logged 21 2/3 innings in a team-high five starts — improved to 1-3 on the year, and lowered his ERA to 4.15 with the complete game effort.
Â
Hochevar and the Cardinals (2-0 MIAC, 9-7 overall) are back in action on Wednesday and Thursday. SMU will host Carleton in a 2:30 p.m. MIAC doubleheader on Wednesday, before welcoming UW-Stout to Max Molock Field for a 3 p.m. nine-inning game the following afternoon. Â
