WINONA, Minn. — In just two days, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team will tip off the 2025-26 season against one of the nation's best, hosting No. 8-ranked Carthage College. Under the direction of first-year head coach Nick Bobb, there's a renewed sense of energy and excitement surrounding this young and hungry Cardinals squad.
Last season didn't unfold as planned for the Cardinals, who battled through injuries and finished with a 6-19 overall record and a 2-14 mark in conference play. But with a fresh start and a new leader at the helm, the focus has shifted toward steady growth and daily improvement.
"We need to focus on building our program one day at a time," said Bobb. "I'm excited to compete every day."
This year's team brings a youthful spark. The Cardinals will open the season at home on Saturday, November 8, against Carthage, with tip-off set for 4:00 p.m. The early schedule features a mix of home and away nonconference matchups throughout November, giving the team plenty of chances to build chemistry before MIAC play begins.
One game to circle on the calendar is Saturday, November 15, when the Cardinals host North Central (MN) for a special homecoming celebration and the official David R. Thies Arena dedication. Admission is free for the community, and fans are encouraged to pack the stands for what promises to be a memorable day of Cardinal basketball.
Saint Mary's will open conference play on December 3 on the road at Carleton College before wrapping up the 2025 calendar year at UW-Superior on December 29. From there, the Cardinals settle into their regular MIAC rhythm, competing every Wednesday and Saturday through the heart of the winter season.
The Cardinals return key leadership in senior forward Khai Branham, who averaged 10 points per game last season and looks to anchor the team on both ends of the court.
"This is a great group to work with," Bobb added. "They've been incredibly coachable and have a strong desire to improve every single day."
