Multiple Cardinals Place at UW-River Falls Winter Classic

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The Saint Mary's track and field team made the snowy trek to the campus of UW-River Falls to compete in the UWRF Winter Classic on Saturday. Multiple Cardinals found success on the road.
 
Sprints

Zari Young, a freshman continually placing in the top of the competition throughout the season, continued her success today as she crossed the finish line in the 60m dash in 7.87 seconds to claim first place. She also nabbed first place in the 200m dash with a time of 26.85 seconds. McKenzie Munson, running a new PR in the 60m, finished fourth with a time of 8.38 seconds. Rachel Kubichka also finished with a new personal best time of 8.47 seconds in the 60m dash.

Samantha Munson finished second overall in the 200m dash with a time of 26.95 seconds. Melissa Torres, sixth, finished the 200m with a time of 28.3 seconds.  
 
Ryan Cramer stepped it up in this heated competition, finishing his 60m in 7.01 seconds, claiming first place at the meet as well as moving up to second all time for the Cardinals in this event. He also placed third in the 200m with a new PR of 23.25 seconds. Jinwoo Jung claimed sixth place with a new personal best time of 7.26 seconds and tying the ninth all-time spot in the 60m for Saint Marys. Jung also placed eighth in the 200m with a time of 24.12 seconds. 
 
In the 400m dash, three Cardinals claimed the top three spots in the competition. Eddie Paton placed first with a new indoor personal best time of 53.07 seconds. Brady Johnson, close behind in second, finished in 53.13 seconds. Cade Kloss finished third in 54.01 seconds.
 
Distance

In the 800m race, Lola Schwinghamer, in her first 800m race of her college career, finished eighth with a time of 2:42.26. On the boys side, Goi Rui (second) and Zander Olmschenk (third) finished with a time of 2:03.43 and 2:03.58, respectively. 
 
Abbie Meyer claimed seventh in the mile, with a PR of 5:54.14. Megan Frosch, eighth, finished in 5:58.85. Katherine Goergen sprinted her way to the finish line, with a new 12 second PR and a time of 6:05.46. Sean Smyth placed seventh in the mile as well, with a new personal best time of 4:37.02.
 
In the 3000m run, Isaiah Fitzgerald raced to the front of the field and finished first with a new PR of 9:06.14. Mya Slavin finished second in her heat of the 3000m with a time of 10:44.23. 
 
Jumps

In the jumps, Antonio claimed fifth place in the long jump with a jump of 6.18m. Many SMU competitors shined in the triple jump as well. Nathan Longfors leaped to second place with a new PR of 12.81m, moving his way up to second all-time for the Cardinals. Ameryn finished third for the women, with a jump 10.43m. She also moved up from sixth to third all-time in SMU history.
 
In the high jump, Hanna Strom and Xara Gin, second and third, respectively, both finished with a jump of 1.40m
 
Throws

Off the track, the throwers shined as well. Casen Fritz finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 15.54m. Morgan Wallendal claimed second as well with a throw of 14.67m, as well as fifth in the shot put, launching the shot out 11.27m. Anna Becker was fourth, throwing the weight 14.42m. Many Cardinals got new personal bests: Abigail Kanz with a throw of 9.38m in the weight, Ellie Hoffarth with a throw of 9.12m in the weight, and finally Alexis Repinski with a launch of 8.17m in the shot put.
 
Relays

For the first time in Saint Mary's history, athletes competed in a mixed 4x400m relay, a relay consisting of two women and two men per team, rather than all women or men for all four legs of the race. Three SMU teams competed in this event, all three finishing in the top 10 teams. Eddie Paton, Lola Schwinghamer, Mya Slavin, and Goi Rui led the way, finishing in second with a time of 4:03.67.
 
The Cardinals will return to competition next Saturday, February 15th, at the Saint John's Invitational in Collegeville.
