Track and Field Competes Strongly Against Top Competitors

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Cardinal Track and Field team returned for their second day of competition on Saturday at the Billiken Invitational hosted by St. Louis University. 
 
The Cardinals made their mark, even in the midst of division one and two athletes.
 
The 4x100m relay was the first event the Cardinals competed in on the track, with the girl's team (Xara Gin, McKenzie Munson, Melissa Torres, and Samantha Munson) claiming fourth place in 50.53s, placing ninth all time at Saint Mary's. 
 
In the 1500m, Abbie Meyer held strong throughout the entire race, finishing with a huge personal best of 5:23.17. Megan Frosch also performed well in the event, closing with an impressive kick to finish in 5:35.79. Evan Finney represented the men in this event, finishing strong in his heat as well with a time of 4:43.38. 
 
The Cardinals loaded athletes up in the 100m dash, with five women and four men competing in the event. 
 
The top performer for the Cardinals in the event was Torres, who ran the 100m in 13.06s and finished in 17th place overall. Her time missed making the top 10 list by only 0.04s. Ben Kritsberg, who crossed the line in 11.34 seconds, claimed 20th place overall. 
 
Several athletes also competed in the 800m run, with the two Saint Mary's female runners finishing within a second of each other: Katherine Goergen (2:40.95) and Lola Schwinghamer (2:41.29), who claimed 17th and 18th place, respectively. 
 
For the men, Goi Ruei took 21st, completing the two-lap race in 2:02.75. Cade Kloss also ran a strong race, setting a new personal best with a time of 2:03.74.
 
In the 200m dash, Rachael Kubichka took 29th place in 27.88s. Emma Gerdes also competed, finishing the event in 29.51s. Torres was the top Cardinal competitor in this event as well, crossing the finish line in 27.26s and claiming 26th place. Eddie Paton and Junwoo Jung (29th and 30th respectively) represented the men in the 200m, finishing only 0.01s apart, with Paton finishing in 23.39s and Jung in 23.40.
 
The team also had many competitors making their mark off the track as well in the field events. 
 
In the shot put, Morgan Wallendal took sixth place, lurching the shot 11.74m on her best attempt. In the hammer throw, Wallendal also took 10th place with her best throw of 39.60m.  Savana Johnson also had an impressive performance, claiming 14th place with her 38.47m throw. 
 
Casen Fritz also took 10th place for the men in the hammer throw, launching his hammer 41.26m. In the Javelin, Henry Gathje claimed the seventh place spot, throwing the javelin 44.74m. Isabella Schei (23.80m, 24th) and Erica Wright (23.48m, 27th) were the top Saint Mary's performers in the javelin for the women. 
 
Ameryn Dostal took seventh place in the triple jump with her performance of 9.81m, also moving her up to fifth all time in SMU history. Nathan Longfors competed in the triple jump as well with a finish of 11.97m and 12th place. Antonio Cisewski and Longfors also competed in the long jump, with Cisewski placing 13th and Longfors 14th each with a distance of 5.86m.
           
The Cardinals will return to the track for more competition next weekend as they compete at the Luther College Norse Invitational in Decorah on Saturday, April 5th.
