Softball Land Five Academic All-District Players

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Five members of the Saint Mary's softball team were recognized as College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honorees, the organization announced Tuesday.

Emily Bonk, Peyton Berg, Abbie Stigler, Naleyah Bork, and Megan McGinnis each not only played a crucial role on the field but a bigger part in the classroom.

To qualify for Academic All-District, student athletes selected must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, be a sophomore and compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played or must start in at least 66 percent of the institution's games. 

Bonk, the senior from Hudson, Wis., is making her second academic honors as the starting catcher for the Cardinals. She started in 44 games for the team, threw out 8 base runners, and had a .986 fielding percentage this season. The psychology major had 27 at bats for six RBIs and two home runs.

Her senior teammate, Bork, is also earning her second Academic All-District honors. The DePere, Wis., native was a MIAC Honorable Mention nod this past season as the designated player. She started 47 games for the Cardinals this season with a batting average of .384 on 99 at bats and 26 RBIs. 

As an All-Conference and All-Region IX player, Berg is earning her first Academic All-District honors as the key first baseman. The psychology major broke the program RBI record her senior season racking up a career 169 RBIs after starting all 49 games this season. 

Also an All-Conference player, Stigler, the senior from Menomonee Falls, Wis., earned her second Academic All-District honor as a Public Relations and Digital Media major. She started all 49 games for the Cardinals at short-stop, assisting on 53 outs this season for a .968 fielding percentage, a career best. 

Lastly, an All-Region IX and All-Conference player, McGinnis is earning her first Academic All-District honor as a junior. The second baseman from Appleton, Wis., also started all 49 games for the Cardinals with a batting average of .411 in 141 at bats. She racked up 58 hits for 35 RBIs.

These Cardinals led the team to back-to-back Super Regional appearances and a third consecutive 35 win season with an overall record of 40-9.
