WINONA, Minn. — MSU-Bottineau, fueled by three powerplay goals and a pair of three-goal periods, handed the Saint Mary's University junior varsity men's hockey team its first loss of the season Monday evening, 6-3 at the SMU Ice Arena.

The Cardinals, playing in their third game in three days, found themselves staring at a 3-0 first-period deficit, as the Lumberjacks scored 22 seconds into the opening period on a goal by Danny Urban, and added goals by Jared McIntosh and Collin McIntee to take a 3-0 advantage.

SMU cut the gap to 3-1 with the only goal of the second period, a tally by Zach Sisk (Pekin, Ill.) at 14:19. The quick-striking Lumberjacks regained their three-goal lead on Colby Rehak's goal 24 seconds into the third period, but SMU answered back with a Chase Marshall (Maple Grove, Minn.) goal six minutes later.

That, however, would be as close as the Cardinals would get, as MSU-Bottineau netted back-to-back goals 18 seconds apart midway through the period, before SMU's Joey Nadeau (Winona, Minn.) closed out the scoring at the 13-minute mark.

Lincoln Nguyen (Owatonna, Minn.) finished with 34 saves for the Cardinals, while the Lumberjacks' Pierre Sorensson stopped 37 of SMU's 40 shots, including 16 in the third period.

SMU (1-1-1 overall) is back in action Sunday, traveling to Richmond, Minn. for a noon rematch with Saint John's. The two teams battled to a 4-4 tie in their first meeting last Saturday.
