WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University junior varsity men's hockey team closed out its season with its 10th straight win, as the Cardinals erupted for five third-period goals in handing UW-Eau Claire a 10-3 setback at the SMU Ice Arena.
Kyle Maas and Eric Zietlin scored a pair of goals, while Nick Gualano, Steve Westphal, Evan Schockley,
Mike Anderson,
Scott Malotka and
Shane Herbert also found the back of the net for the Cardinals.
The two teams battled to a 2-2 deadlock after the first period, but the Cardinals would rattled off eight unanswered goals — three in the second and five in the third — before UW-EC's Jake Reiner beat SMU goalie
Tim High with the Blugolds' third goal of the game with 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
High stopped 21 of the Blugolds' 24 shots while Ryan Laughlin kicked out 56 SMU shots — including 29 in the third period alone.
The Cardinals finished the season at 13-3.
