ST. PAUL, Minn. — After two “trial runs,” the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams officially kicked off their seasons Saturday at the Hamline Quadrangular.

And coach Eric Lindquist could not be happier.

The Cardinal men collected a 71-27 victory over Hamline, while the SMU women picked up wins over Augsburg (93-17) and Hamline (63-47), while also dropping a 76-63 decision to St. Catherine.

“As a coaching staff, we are just tickled with the results,” said Lindquist, whose team had taken part in the Augsburg Pentathlon and the Carleton Relays, both nontraditional meets, but was taking part in its first head-to-head competition Saturday. “We were hoping for some solid performances, and we got that — and more.”

Much, much more.

Jon Fox (Winona, Minn.) led the way for the SMU men, winning both the 50 freestyle (23:06) and the 100 breaststroke (1:01.77), while Jared Boltjes (Ramsey, Minn.) won the three-meter diving (114.90), Matt Raamey (Centennial, Colo.) captured the 500 freestyle (5:28.04) and Tim Tysk (St. Paul, Minn.) was victorious in the 100 freestyle (51.60). Tysk also added a second-place effort in the 50 freestyle (23.41) and Neil Heacox (San Diego, Calif.) was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.85).

Jennifer Salzman (Hilo, Hawaii) collected the SMU women's lone overall first-place finish, clocking a time of 1:08.40 to win the 100 butterfly.

“This was a great start for us,” said Lindquist, whose teams are back in action next weekend, squaring off against Macalester in a dual meet on Friday, then taking part in the Macalester Invitational on Saturday. “There were so many solid showings — both from our newcomers and our returners. Our schedule only gets tougher as the season goes on, but we'll certainly enjoy a performance like this.”
