ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's junior varsity hockey team raced out to a 3-0 lead, then held off a third-period Gustavus rally to beat the Gusties 4-2 Sunday at the Don Roberts Ice Arena.

Blake Zemaitis (Mount Prospect, Ill.) scored the only goal of the first period, while Brett Weber (Stillwater, Minn.) and Joey Nadeau (Winona, Minn.) added second-period goals to give SMU what appeared to be a commanding 3-0 advantage heading into the third period.

The Gusties made things interesting, getting back-to-back goals less than a minute apart midway through the third period to cut the Cardinals lead to one, 3-2. That, however, was as clase as GAC would get, as the Cardinals sealed the win with a goal at 17:18.

Eric Qvale (Minnetonka, Minn.) finished wiht 29 saves — including all 12 GAC shots in the second period — in helping SMU to its third straight win.
