ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's basketball team, coming off a heartbreaking 87-85 overtime nonconference loss at Lake Forest on Sunday — kick off their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule on the road Wednesday, traveling to Macalster for a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Scots.

Last Action: The Cardinals suffered a heartbreaking loss on Sunday, as Lake Forest's Dayton Young scored at the buzzer to break an 85-85 tie and lift the Foresters to an 87-85 overtime win over SMU in Lake Forest, Ill. Macalester, meanwhile, have been off since Nov. 24, when Northwestern (Minn.) used a 17-0 run in the game's final 5:51 to earn a 72-48 nonconference victory in Roseville, Minn.

A Year Ago: The Cardinals swept the team's two conference meetings a year ago by a combined seven points.

December 3, 2008: Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) scored with 20 seconds remaining — giving SMU its first lead of the game — then knocked down one of two free throws with five seconds remaining, as SMU opened its conference schedule with a 67-65 victory at the SMU Gym.

January 21, 2009: Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left, and the Cardinals outscored Macalester 11-6 in the extra frame to lead SMU to a 70-65 MIAC victory in St. Paul, Minn.

Sunday's matchup vs. Lake Forest was the first-ever meeting between the two teams. … Sunday's game was also SMU's first OT game since a 70-65 victory over tonight's opponent, Macalester, on Jan. 21, 2008. The 87-85 loss was the first overtime setback since falling to St. Thomas 65-62 on Feb. 21, 2003. … Pat Freeman (Champlin, Minn.) scored a career-high 15 points and missed his first career double-double by two rebounds. Freeman's previous career best was the 12-point showing in SMU's season-opening 73-62 win over the University of Dubuque. … Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) poured in a season-best 23 points vs. the Foresters Sunday. Wright's 23-point effort was the 27th time in SMU's last 29 games that the SMU junior has scored 10 or more points. Wright has now scored in double figures in 49 of his 53 collegiate games. … Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in 20 points vs. Lake Forest, giving SMU back-to-back games with two 20-point scorers. The Cardinals have had at least one 20-point scorer in each of their first four games. … Chris Palmer (Faribault, Minn.), poured in game- and season-high 20 points — including 14 in the first half — against UW-La Crosse on Nov. 18, chipped in 11 points against the Foresters Sunday. … The Cardinals enter today's game boasting three players averaging in double figures — Holland (18.8 ppg), Wright (18.5 ppg) and Palmer (12.0 ppg). … Holland, who extended his consecutive games played streak to 53 vs. Lake Forest, leads the team in 3-pointers with nine, while Wright is shooting a team-best 89 percent (25-for-28) from the free throw line. … After opening the season with back-to-back home games, tonight's contest is the third straight road games. SMU returns home on Saturday against Bethel.

Tonight's game is just the third of the season for the Scots, who opened with a 77-60 home win over Crown, before falling to Northwestern on the road 72-48. … After tonight's game vs. SMU, the Scots hit the road for three straight, before opening a five-game homestand beginning with a nonconference contest against Martin Luther on Dec. 14. … Colin Keeley enters tonight's conference opener as the team's leading scorer and rebounder through two games, recording a double-double in both contests. He scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds vs. Crown, then tallied 11 points and 11 boards vs. Northwestern. … Eleven of Keeley's  12 field goals have come from inside the 3-point line. Keeley is 1-for-6 from behind the arc. … Macalester has outscored its opponents 66-56 in the first half, but have been outscored 76-59 over the game's final 20 minutes. … Macalester's season-opening win over Crown snapped a 33-game losing streak. The Scots were winless in 25 contests a year ago. … This is the first season for head coach Tim Whittle, who comes to Macalester from Washington University in St. Louis, where he was the top assistant for the two-time defending NCAA Division III champions.
