Last Action: The Cardinals could not shut down the high-powered St. Thomas attack last weekend, as the Tommies posted
7-1 and
9-2 victories over SMU. … Augsburg, meanwhile, pushed its winning streak to four straight with a pair of wins (
6-3 and
5-4 in overtime) against defending regular-season conference champion Hamline last weekend.
A Year Ago: SMU and Augsburg closed out their regular-seasons with a pair of one-goal games a year ago. The Cardinals got two goals from
David Gross and three assists by
Adam Gill en route to a
4-3 victory at the SMU Ice Arena, while the Auggies scored three times in the second period and pushed their lead to 5-1 early in the third before holding off a late charge in a
5-4 victory in Minneapolis, Minn.
Playoff Picture: Despite dropping both games vs. St. Thomas last weekend, the Cardinals still had a mathematical shot at reaching the MIAC Playoffs. In a bizarre turn of events, however, the Cardinals were eliminated from the playoff race on Monday — without even playing a game. It was ruled that Concordia unknowingly allowed an ineligible student-athlete to participate in their contest on January 17, 2009 against Bethel . Per NCAA/MIAC rules, the Cobbers must forfeit their victory and Bethel has been awarded the victory and the two points in the standings. With four games remaining, the fifth-place Royals have now jumped from 12 points to 14 points. Four straight wins to end the season by SMU would only give the Cardinals 13 points.
Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals' three goals last weekend vs. St. Thomas were scored by three different players.
Nick Carlson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) scored SMU's lone goal vs. the Tommies on Friday, while
Colin McGlynn (St. Louis, Mo.) and Tommy Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) accounted for SMU's two goals on Saturday. … McGlynn's third-period tally Saturday was his first collegiate goal. … SMU's back-to-back losses to UST extended its losing streak to three straight. …
Steve Murphy (Anchorage, Alaska) leads the team with eight goals and 14 points. He is one of four players with 10 or more points. #A.J. Woodward# (Lenexa, Kan.),
Mike Glaesmer (Traverse City, Mich.) and
Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) are the other three, boasting 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively. … Bohn's nine assists are also a team high. …
Karac Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who stopped 31 shots en route to his first collegiate win (6-3 vs. Bethel on Jan. 30) in his first collegiate start, posted a career-best 40 saves in SMU's loss to St. Thomas Friday. … SMU's six goals, 10 assists and 16 points vs. Bethel on Jan. 30 all equaled the team's season highs. … Fourteen of Saint Mary's 21 games have been against nationally ranked teams. SMU's first four games were nonconference games against No. 15 St. Scholastica, No. 8 UW-Superior, No. 6 UW-Stevens Point and No. 12 UW-Eau Claire, while conference opponents Gustavus, Hamline and St. Olaf are all in the Top 15. St. Norbert entered its Jan. 10 game vs. SMU as the nation's fourth-ranked team, while UW-Stout was ranked seventh. … SMU has played four overtime games this season. The Cardinals are 2-1-1 in those four games, with wins over Concordia (6-5) and UW-River Falls (2-1), a 7-6 loss to defending MIAC regular-season champion Hamline and a 3-3 tie vs. Concordia. … UW-River Falls' single goal in SMU's 2-1 OT win on Jan. 17 was the fewest allowed by the Cardinals since a 3-1 win over St. Scholastica on Jan. 26, 2007. … The Cardinals scored first vs. Bethel on Jan. 30 — on the first of two goals by
Trevor Tolibas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) — marking just the second time in 20 games in which the Cardinals have scored the game's first goal. A first-period tally by
Andy Roberts (Rochester, Minn.) vs. Lake Forest on Jan. 9 is the only time this season the Cardinals have scored first.
Auggie Notes: Augsburg enters tonight's game red-hot, having won four straight, including Saturday's OT thriller vs. Hamline. … Cory Ellertson netted the overtime game-winner for the Auggies vs. Hamline. It was his third goal of the season and second game-winner. … Despite being held to a season-low 16 shots on goal vs. Hamline last Friday, Augsburg still came away with a 6-3 win. … Chris Johnson leads the team in all three offensive categories, boastings 12 goals, 17 assists and 29 points. … Johnson is one of two Auggies with 20 or more points and one of seven with at least 10 points. … Nick Guran has scored eight goals for the Auggies — six of which have come on the power play. … Andrew Kent has been the workhorse in goal for the Auggies, starting all 21 games. He boasts a 3.79 goals-against-average and an .887 save percentage. … Four of Augsburg's seven wins have come at home, where Augsburg is 4-6-0. The Auggies are 3-8-0 on the road. … Eleven of the Auggies' 21 games have been decided by two goals or less. … Augsburg has been held to two goals or less nine of their 14 losses.
