Last Action:
The Cardinals are coming off a 4-4 showing during their four-day, eight-game stay at the Tucson Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. SMU closed out the week with 9-0 and 6-1 losses vs. No. 6 Luther and Pacific on March 22. … Carleton, meanwhile, is coming off an 8-0 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday. It was the last of nine games played in Anaheim, Calif., for the Knights.

Last Meeting: The Cardinals rebounded from a pair of disappointing performances against Saint Benedict two days earlier — in which SMU was swept 5-1 and 10-5 — in convincing fashion on April 22 in Northfield, Minn., rolling to wins of 7-1 and 15-3 over the Knights.

Saint Mary's Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals opened play in the Tucson Invitational with splits in their first four games — a 7-1 loss to Lakeland, a 4-0 victory vs. Amherst, a 27-0 win vs. Mount Mary and a 6-2 setback vs. Central — then swept Calvin (5-0) and St. Joseph's (10-0), before closing out the trip with losses to No. 6 Luther (9-0) and Pacific (6-1). … SMU's 27 runs vs. Mount Marty marked the second time this season the Cardinals have plated 20 or more runs. SMU opened the season with a 29-0 rout of North Central (Minn.) on March 14. … SMU's 27- and 29-run outbursts were the second- and third-most runs scored in school history, behind the 43 runs the Cardinals plated in a 43-2 win over St. Catherine on April 24, 1997. … Katy Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) hit a team-leading .500 (12-for-24) during SMU's eight spring-trip games. The SMU sophomore also led the team in at-bats (24), hits (12), RBIs (9), slugging percentage (.583) and walks (4). … Cassie Otte (Randolph, Minn.) hit .400 in eight games, equaling Gannon's 12 hits, while also scoring a team-best nine runs. … Gannon has recorded at least one hit in all 12 games this season, including six multiple-hit games. She also leads the team with four multiple-RBI games, including a five-RBI effort during a 3-for-3, three-run effort vs. Mount Mary on March 21. … Otte, meanwhile, boasts a team-leading eight multiple-hit games. … SMU's pitching staff finished with a 3.21 earned-run-average during its spring trip. Mallory Betzold (Farmington, Minn.) tossed a team-best 34.2 innings, going 2-4 with a 3.84 ERA and a team-leading 15 strikeouts. … Madeline Salmon (Woodbury, Minn.) did not give up an earned run in her eight innings of spring-trip work. The SMU sophomore tossed a six-inning, two-hit, complete-game shutout in her first collegiate start vs. St. Joseph's on March 21. … The Cardinals have outscored their first 12 opponents 111-38 — including 29 2 in the second inning and 28-7 in the third. … SMU is 6-0 when scoring in the first inning and 7-0 when scoring the game's first run. … Five of SMU's eight wins have come via shutout.

Carleton Knights Notes: The Knight's wild, 8-7 season-opening win over UM-Morris snapped Carleton's 31-game losing streak. Carleton had gone 0-31 a year ago. … Since that win, however, Carleton has dropped 10 straight, including all nine games during their spring trip to California. … After scoring eight runs in their season opener, Carleton has managed just nine in their last 10 games. … Mari Jo Long, who spent all of last season studying abroad in Japan, equaled her career high with 13 strikeouts in Carleton's win over UM-Morris. … Long has thrown a team-best 38.2 inning, striking out  41. … Michael Johnson leads the team's offensive attack, hitting .320. … Carleton has been outscored by a combined 99-8 through innings one through five, but the Knights hold a 9-4 edge after the fifth inning.
