WINONA, Minn. — Two mistakes.
That was all it took for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team to go from a possible streak-snapping win to a tough-luck loss.
The Cardinals got caught flat-footed on a breakaway, and gave Concordia a great opportunity off a second-half corner — and the Cobbers took advantage of both, as they handed SMU 2-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday at Ochrymowycz Field.
“There are certain things that we did well today, but we're still missing pieces,” SMU coach Chris Dembiec said. “The problems are fixable, but it's frustrating.”
Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, the Cardinals were able to tie the game as
Zach Palma (Washburn, Wis.) headed a free kick from
Ryan Rademacher (La Crosse, Wis.) past Concordia goalkeeper Peter Runquist.
And with the game-tying goal came, what seemed to be a shift in momentum.
“The problems are in the details right now,” Dembiec said. “And today, we got most of those details right, but we still have work to do.”'
“We know we aren't the most talented team, but I've said it all along and I'll say it again, I still believe in these guys and what they can do, we just need to put it all together.”
The Cardinals are back in action Wednesday, as they travel to Fayette, Iowa, to take on Upper Iowa in a 4 p.m. nonconference contest.
