ST. PAUL, Minn. — It was an interesting Friday evening for Saint Mary's University swimming and diving coach
Eric Lindquist.
The day started with both Cardinal teams set to head for Hamline for a dual-meet against the Pipers. Mother Nature, however, had other ideas, as the season's first snowstorm forced the Cardinals' head coach to make a bit of an adjustment.
“Because the women's team is going straight from (Hamline) to Concordia (for a double-dual vs. the Pipers and the Cobbers) — and because the men would have had to travel back to Winona (Friday night) right into the teeth of the storm, we decided to leave them home,” explained Lindquist. “It would have been nice for the men to have been able to go up against Hamline, but it was more of a safety issue than anything.”
The Cardinal women certainly made the most of their dual-meet against the Pipers, getting a pair of first-place finishes from both
Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and
Lisa Lucas (Gunnison, Colo.) en route to a 121-64 victory.
“We had a ton of great swims,” said Lindquist. “Lisa and Lize getting two firsts was just the tip of the iceberg for us tonight.”
Flynn swept the two diving competitions, winning the one-meter with 177.20 points, while taking the three-meter with a 194.35 goals. Lucas, meanwhile, touched the wall first in the 200 with a time of 2:08.18, and also took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:50.75.
Nikki Farmer (Medford, Wis.) and
Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) also picked up first-place finishes for the Cardinals, with Farmer winning the 100 freestyle in 1:02.71, while Smaron was first in the 100 breaststroke, stopping the clock in 1:16.51.
