Cardinals enjoy solid day at home invite

WINONA, Minn. — Friday evening was a chance for the Saint Mary's University track and field teams to shine in front of their home fans, as the Cardinals hosted the Cardinal Open at the Gostomski Fieldhouse.

And shine they did.

Led by John Kelly's (Rochester, Minn.) record-setting performance in the 55, the Cardinals put on a show for their home fans.

And coach Shawn McMahon could not be happier.

“This was a very successful meet for us,” he said. “We got some outstanding performances from a number of individuals and it was great to see our athletes excel on their own home stage.”

Kelly set the school mark in the 55 preliminaries, clocking of time of 6.62, then nearly equaled that in winning the final in 6.63. Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) picked up a first in the 200 (23.47) and another in the long jump (5.82 meters), while Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) was first in the weight throw (17.46 meters.

Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) turned in a season-best time of 7.58 to place third in the 55 to lead the way for the Cardinal women, while also adding a third in the long jump (5.06 meters) and a fifth in the triple jump (10.12 meters). Ashley Acosta (Winnebago, Minn.) chipped in a third in the 1,000 (3:12.74) and Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) uncorked a toss of 14.28 meters to place fifth in the shot put.

“We're progressing nicely,” said McMahon, whose squad is back in action on Friday, traveling to the University of Minnesota Snowshoe Open. “We just need to keep improving each week.”
