Wright's 30 not enough as SMU drops finale

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — For the second game in a row, the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team boasted a 30-point scorer, as Will Wright (Chicago, Ill.) tossed in a game-high 30 points against Augsburg Friday evening.

Unlike two nights earlier, however — when Lukas Holland (La Crosse, Wis.) drained a career-best 32 points in the Cardinals' 77-64 win over St. Olaf — Wright's effort didn't come with a victory attached, as Augsburg held off a late SMU charge to beat the Cardinals 76-72.

Augsburg kept the Cardinals at bay through the game's opening 20 minutes, building leads as big as eight, before settling for a two-point, 30-28 halftime advantage. And it was more of the same in the second half, as the Auggies' lead climbed to a game-high 11, 67-56, with 3:38 remaining, only to have the Cardinals cut it to four, 74-70, with seven seconds remaining.

That, however, would be as close as the Cardinals would get, as Augsburg's Matthew Quammen would drain a pair of free throws, and Wright would net his 10th field goal of the evening, in the game's final seconds to round out the scoring.

Along with Wright's 30 points, the Cardinals — who shot 38 percent from the field and were 19-for-21 from the free throw line — got a season-high eighth double-double from Chris Palmer (Faribault, Minn.), who netted 10 points and hauled in a career-high 15 boards.

David Olson scored 17 points and Cory Polta added 14 for the Auggies.

The Cardinals close out their season with a 7-13 conference mark, while finishing 9-16 overall.
