WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team, coming off an eight-game stay at the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif., is back in action on Thursday, when the Cardinals head across town to take on Winona State in a 3 p.m. nonconference doubleheader.

The Cardinals went 3-5 during their trip to the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif.. SMU split its two games against Kenyon (winning 4-3 and losing 5-0), while also beating Hastings (9-1) and Puget Sound (15-8), and falling to Cal State-San Marcos (5-0), Chapman (4-2), Tufts (10-0) and 11th-ranked Linfield (6-0). Winona State, meanwhile, went 2-2 during its four games in St. Cloud, Minn., last weekend. The Warriors sandwiched a 3-1 win over St. Cloud State and a 6-0 triumph over University of Mary between a 1-0 loss to UM-Duluth and a 5-4 loss to St. Cloud State.

SMU's stay in California proved to be a bit streaky. After opening with a 5-0 loss to Kenyon, the Cardinals won three straight, then closed out the trip with four straight losses. … SMU scored 28 runs in its three Sun West Tournament wins, but managed just two runs in its five losses. … Kellie Simons (Richfield, Minn.) was the Cardinals' offensive leader at the Sun West Tournament, hitting .458 with team-highs in hits (11), total bases (16) and slugging percentage (.667). … Erin Stenseth (Eau Claire, Wis) and Julianne Bartosz (Mokena, Ill.) also hit over .409 during SMU's stay in California, batting .450 and .409, respectively. Stenseth collected a team-high three doubles and scored a team-leading six runs. … Paige Carter (Rosemount, Minn.) belted her first collegiate home runs in SMU's 9-1 win over Hastings (Neb.) on March 18. Simons and Katy Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) also hit home runs during the team's spring trip. … Carter, Stenseth and Simons all went 4-for-5 in SMU's 15-8 victory over Hastings (Neb.) on March 18. … Simons and Bartosz lead the team with three multiple-hit games each, while Carter and Hanna Schmitt (Rosemount, Minn.) have each compiled two multiple-RBI games. … Schmitt also had her team-leading four-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-2 day vs. Chapman on March 20. … Jaci Prondzinski (Ettrick, Wis.) collected two of SMU's three pitching wins, going 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA. The Warriors opened the season with a perfect 10-0 run during its season-opening spring trip to Orlando, Fla., then followed that up with a 2-2 record in four games in St. Cloud, Minn., last weekend. … WSU enters today's doubleheader ranked No. 3 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25. … WSU is coming off a 2009 season in which the Warriors went 50-13 and finished fifth at the NCAA Division II College World Series. … Stacey Struzynski enters today's DH vs. SMU with a microscopic 0.16 ERA. She also leads the team in innings pitched (42.2), wins (6), complete games (6) and strikeouts (66). … Struzynski was named NFCA National Pitcher of the Week, allowing just eight hits — including a pair of one-hitters — and not surrendering a run in her first four starts. She followed that up by tossing no-hitter against No. 16 Bloomsburg (Pa.) on March 9. … Samantha Hildebrandt leads the Warrior offense hitting .500.
