WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team, coming off a pair of home Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victories over Augsburg on Saturday, step out of conference play Sunday, hosting Luther in a nonconference doubleheader at SMU Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

The Cardinals erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to an 11-6 conference win over Augsburg in the first game of their MIAC doubleheader Saturday, then completed the sweep by putting together a pair of three-run innings in a 7-4 win in Game 2. Luther, meanwhile, had to settle for an IIAC split against Simpson in Indianola, Iowa, on Saturday, as the Norse dropped a 16-8 decision in the opener, then bounced back with a 2-0 win in the second game.

Luther and SMU squared off in Tucson, Ariz., a year ago, with the Norse coming away with a 9-0 nonconference victory.

Paige Carter (Rosemount, Minn.) extended her career-high hitting streak to seven straight Saturday, going 4-for-7 in the twinbill against Augsburg. Carter also drove in four runs and scored three times vs. the Auggies. … Katy Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) had her five-game hitting streak snapped in the opener vs. Augsburg Saturday, but bounced back by going 3-for-4 in Game 2. … With their two wins vs. Augsburg, the Cardinals jumped into fourth place in the MIAC standings, one game in front of Augsburg and Bethel. … With her three-hit effort in Game 2, Gannon moved into a tie with Erin Stenseth (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Kellie Simons (Richfield, Minn.) for the team lead in multiple-hit games with eight. … Stenseth also leads the team with a .388 batting average, while also boasting team-highs in at-bats (80), runs (16), hits (31), doubles (9), RBIs (14) and total bases (43).
