WINONA, Minn. — It had been so long since the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams had competed, that coach Eric Lindquist jokingly posted instructions — “right arm, left arm, right arm, left arm ... in case ya forgot” — on the team's Facebook page earlier this week.

If their performance Saturday afternoon at the Jul Gernes Pool is any indication, they hadn't forgotten.

Not by a long shot.

The Cardinals collected first-place finishes in 15 of the 26 events — including a pair of wins by Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa) and Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) — as the SMU men won its dual against Hamline, while the SMU women swept their duals against Hamline and Augsburg.

“It was a great way to get back into a competitive mode after the long break,” said Lindquist. “We knew coming in that we were going to train through this meet, but everyone was pretty pumped to be competing at home, and we really had a great effort from everyone today.”

Flynn swept the women's diving events, winning the one-meter with a score of 210.50 and the three-meter with a 189.60 total. Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) chipped in a first-place effort in the 100 butterfly (1:00.42), while Molly Spray (Chicago, Ill. / 100 freestyle, 1:07.78), Andrea Fogel (Haifa, Isreal / 100 backstroke, 1:12.83), Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn. / 50 freestyle, 28.46), and Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn. / 10 breaststroke, 1:18.65) also chipped in first-place performances.

Ross led the way for the SMU men, winning the 100 butterfly in 100 butterfly in 1:00.42, while adding a time of 4:52.17 to take first in the 400 IM. Other first-place finishers for the Cardinal men included Robert Doyle (Hudson, Wis. / 200 freestyle, 2:23.91) and Brandon Matis (Blaine, Minn. / 100 freestyle, 53.44).

“I'm very pleased with the way we performed today,” said Lindquist. “To come away with three dual-meet wins, that's the frosting on the cake.”

The Cardinals are back in action next Saturday, traveling to Carleton for a 1 p.m. dual meet against the Knights
