WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University junior varsity men's hockey team rebounded from a disappointing 6-2 loss to Gustavus on Friday in the teams' rematch on Saturday, as the Cardinals erupted for four third-period goals in beating GAC 6-4 at the SMU Ice Arena.
Brian Soskin (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and
Peter Ronning (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each scored a pair of goals for SMU.
Soskin and
Jimmy Stewart (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored in the second period for the Cardinals, who entered the game's final 20 minutes tie with the Gusties 2-2.
Evan Shockley (Omaha, Neb.) put SMU in front seven minutes into the third period, and Ronning scored a minute after Shockley to make it 4-2, before adding his second of the period 16 seconds later to push the Cardinals' advantage to 5-2.
GAC would answer with two goals in a four-minute span to cut the lead to one, 5-4, before Soskin tallied his second of the game with nine seconds remaining to seal the win.
Allen Mekash (Roseau, Minn.) earned in the win in goal for SMU, stopping 32 Gustavus shots.
