WINONA, Minn. — It was a tale of two halves — a good half and a not-so-good half — for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team Wednesday evening.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, UW-Steven's Point took advantage of the Cardinals' not-so-good half — not to mention the gusty winds — to score two goals late in the first half to beat SMU 2-0 Wednesday at Ochrymowycz Field.

“There were some good things, there were some bad things,” coach Neil Cassidy said. “I told them that at halftime to make the second half a game in itself, instead of looking at the whole thing.”

And that is exactly what the Cardinals did, as they battled the Pointers to a scoreless draw, while holding UW-SP without a shot on goal over the final 45 minutes.

Though held scoreless, the Cardinals — who fall to 2-12-0 overall — tallied six shots, with Kelsey Schneider (Portland, Ore.) and Tessa Scanlon (Cologne, Minn.) recording two apiece. Goalkeeper Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) made three saves.

“We had some opportunities we could have taken advantage of, and it would have been a completely different game,” Cassidy said.

The Pointers' Angela Gallow had a hand in both goals, as she converted a pass from Megan Mahoney to score the first goal with 8:13 remaining in the first half, then assisted on Sarah Vitale's goal less than seven minutes later.

The Cardinals are back on the road on Saturday, after a four-game home stand, when they travel to Saint Benedict for a 1 p.m. Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup with the Blazers.
