ST. PAUL, Minn.  — The Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams kicked off a busy weekend Friday evening with a dual meet against Macalester — and what a kick-off it was for the Cardinals' Mark Ross (Dubuque, Iowa), Neil Heacox (San Diego, Calif.), Liz Flynn (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Linda Tierney (Cloquet, Minn.).

Ross picked up a pair of firsts, while Heacox, Flynn and Tierney each added a first and a second for the Cardinals, who follow up Friday's dual by taking part in the Roger Alman Invitational, hosted by Macalester, on Saturday.

Unfortunately for SMU, their efforts were not enough to give the Cardinals the dual-meet wins, as Macalester handed the SMU men a 94-68 loss, while the SMU women fell to the Scots 140-80.

Ross proved to be the man to beat in both the 200 IM and the 100 backstroke, recording a time of 2:07.78 to win the 200 IM, while adding a time of 57.58 in touching the wall first in the 100 backstroke. Heacox chipped in a first in the 100 breaststroke (1;05.31) and a second in the 200 IM (2:12.50).

Flynn earned her first in the three-meter diving (194.70), with a second-place effort in the one-meter (172.80), while Tierney was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.42) and second in the 200 IM (2:25.30).

Abby Kratzke (Dent, Minn.) and Anna Smaron (Maple Plain, Minn.) each chipped in second-place efforts for SMU, with Kratzke posting a time of :109.57 in the 100 butterfly, while Smaron added a time of 1:18.18 in the 100 breaststroke.
