ST. PETER, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's junior varsity hockey team dropped its season opener Saturday, falling to Gustavus 8-7 in overtime at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.

The Cardinals and Gusties each scored two goals in the opening period, with Tyler Ridgedell and Nick Gualano lighting the lamp for SMU.

SMU got goals from Anthony Tillman, Kyle Maas, Peter Roning and Greg Gardiner in the second period, as the Cardinals grabbed a 6-4 lead heading into the game's final period. Mike Anderson padded SMU's lead to 7-5 with a goal six minutes into the third period, but the Gusties answered with three unanswered goals — including the game-winner at 4:33 of overtime — to lift GAC to the victory.

Tim High finished with 21 saves for the Cardinals, who return to action on Tuesday, hosting the Twin Cities Northern Lights in a 7:30 p.m. game.
