MIAC Tournament GameDay
ST. PAUL, Minn. — Just one day after knocking off Hamline in a must-win game, the Saint Mary's University fastpitch softball team once again found itself with its back against the wall.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, this time it was Gustavus that will live to fight another day, as the Gusties handed SMU an 11-5 setback during an elimination game of the MIAC Tournament Saturday at St. Thomas.
The Cardinals end their season with a 23-16 overall record. It was SMU's first appearance in the MIAC postseason since 2007.
GAC jumped ahead quickly, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning, but SMU battled back to tie the game with a run of its own in the third. The Gusties weren't finished, however, as they scored four more in the bottom of the third, and then three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
There were eight home runs hit in the game, five of which came from the Gusties.
Katy Gannon (Roselle, Ill.) made her final game in a Cardinals uniform a memorable one, as she went 3-for-4 with two home runs.
Paige Carter (Rosemount, Minn.) also had three hits for SMU.
