OSHKOSH, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team picked up its first goal of the season Saturday afternoon, as
Amanda Rahman (Rochester, Minn.) found the back of the net 15 minutes into the opening half.
Unfortunately for SMU and first-year head coach
Neil Cassidy, the Cardinals couldn't parlay that first goal into their first win, as UW-Oshkosh scored three unanswered goals and handed Saint Mary's a 3-1 nonconference setback.
“We did not play very well today,” said Cassidy, whose team is right back in action on Sunday, traveling to Fond du Lac, Wis., for a 1 p.m. nonconference game at Marian. “I thought we played very well in our first two games, but today we just didn't have it.”
Rahman, who scored five goals a year ago, got the Cardinals on the board at 15:40 of the first half, taking a feed from
Teri Valenzuela (Morton Grove, Ill.) and launching a shot from 20 yards out that beat Titan goalkeeper Brittany Walder.
UW-Oshkosh would knot things up just before halftime on a goal by Becca Blue, before taking the lead for good when Chelsea Kieszh converted ona corner kick 11 minutes into the second half. The Titans' Carmen Giordellisi then gave UW-Oshkosh some breathing room with her first goal of the season in the game's 81st minute.
Cassie Hulett (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished with four saves in goal for the Cardinals, who are back in action Wednesday, hosting St. Thomas in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener at 7 p.m. at Ochrymowycz Field.
