WAVERLY, Iowa — When the Saint Mary's University women's golf team left the course following Saturday's opening round of the Wartburg Invitational, coach Kevin Landrum was hoping his team learned a few things that they could use to their advantage when they returned to the course the following day.

And if their performance in Sunday's second round is any indication, the Cardinals are very quick learners.

SMU got collegiate-best performances from three golfers, as the Cardinals turned in the third-best single-day scoring total in program history with a 349. Combined with their opening-round 366, the Cardinals finished with a two-day total of 715 — the second-best 36-hole total — to finish 14th in the 20-team field.

“The ladies all played really well from start to finish,” said Landrum. “They made some great putts to save par, played very smart, and each one of them played their game.

“it was good to see them smiling and really enjoying themselves,” Landrum added. “We learned from Day 1 and used that to improve our scores.”

Lauren Ulbrich (Rochester, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals on Sunday, shooting a career-best round of 85 to finish at 175 (90-85), while Jenna Mrozinski (North St. Paul, Minn.) and Sarah Gustafson (Esko, Minn.) also had career days, as Mrozinski recorded an 86 and Gustafson tallied an 88.

Fueled by her 86, Mrozinski finished the two-day tournament at 185 (99-86), with Gustafson recorded a 192 (104-88). Rachel Lamberty (Farmington, Minn.) followed up her opening-round 86 with a 90 for a 176 total, and Gia Puch (Des Plaines, Ill.) rounded out the Cardinals' effort with a 90-95—185.

Wartburg won the team title, edging St. Olaf by two shots, 629-631, while Wartburg's Kelsi Sawatzky earned individual medalist honors, shooting rounds of 76-74—150 to beat Gina Kabasakalis of Carleton by four shots.

“It was a great day in Iowa,” Landrum said. “I'm very proud of the way everyone performed this weekend.”

The Cardinals are right back in action this Saturday and Sunday, traveling to Lake City, Minn., to participate in the Division III Midwest Classic at the Jewel Golf Course.
