ST. PAUL, Minn. —
Evan Pederson (Onalaska, Wis.) scored 14 points for the second straight game and
Michael Burfeind (Lewiston, Minn.) chipped in 13, but the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team could not overcome a 16-point halftime deficit, falling to Hamline 80-61 Monday evening at HU's Hutton Arena.
Pederson, who netted 14 points in Saturday's heartbreaking 65-61 loss to Augsburg, went 5-for-13 from the field and added four free throws en route to his second-straight 14-point effort.
Burfeind, meanwhile, was 4 of 9 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line, as the junior scored in double figures for the 13th time in SMU's 14 games.
Pat Freeman (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) chipped in a team-high nine rebounds.
The Pipers scored the game's first six points on a pair of field goals by Noah Aguirre and another by Dior Ford and never looked back, using a 14-4 run over the final 6:18 of the opening half to take a 42-26 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Cardinals scored 35 points over the game's final 20 minutes — but could gain no ground of the Pipers — as Hamline built its lead to as many as 25, before settling for the 19-point victory.
The Cardinals (2-7 MIAC, 2-12 overall), who fall to 2-2 in their last four games, are back in action on Wednesday, returning home to host Carleton in a 7:30 p.m. conference game at the SMU Gym.
