WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) set the tone for the day with a second-place finish in the women's race at the SMU No-Limit Invitational Friday afternoon.

And Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) followed suit with a second-place finish of his own in the men's race.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.), however, decided to do the duo one better, as the SMU sophomore led a 1-2-3 Cardinal finish in helping the Saint Mary's men to the team title.

“It was a good day all the way around,” said SMU coach Ward Berndt, whose men's team edged second-place UW-Eau Claire by seven points, while the SMU women were third behind UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse. “Katie ran a great race on the women's side, and our top three guys really stepped it up a notch.

“There were some great individual performances, I'm very happy with the way everything unfolded.”

Stolz got the day off on the right foot, posting a six-kilometer time of 24:14, just two one-hundreths of a second behind UW-La Crosse's Hannah Heidvogel, who outkicked Stolz down the stretch to win individual honors.

Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) was the second Cardinal across the line, stopping the clock in 25:01, while Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn. / 25:17), Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa / 25:36) and Kristen Thelen (Rochester, Minn. / 25:46) rounded out the SMU top five.

Hayes led the men's race from start to finish, touring the 8K course in 26:52, with Borash a close second (27:00) and Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn.) completing the Cardinal trifecta with a third-place time of 27:08. John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 28:05) and Jase Pater ( / 28:25) rounded out SMU's top five finishers.

“This was a good race for us,” said Berndt. “We've still got plenty of work ahead of us, but for our third meet of the season, it was a very good showing.”

The Cardinals are back in action next on Oct. 13, traveling to La Crosse, Wis., to take part in the UW-La Crosse Jim Drews Invitational.
