GameDay Preview
WINONA, Minn. — In his last outing, Saint Mary's University's
Will Swiggum scored a career-high 24 points, but missed out on his third double-double by one rebound in the SMU men's basketball team's conference game against Augsburg Saturday.
Monday evening, the freshman forward was not to be denied as he eclipsed the 20-point barrier for the second straight game — finishing with a game-high 23 points — but this time added 11 board to notch that elusive third double-double.
Swiggum's effort — not to mention a 22-point showing from
Evan Pederson (Onalaska, Wis.) and a 17-point performance by
Michael Burfeind (Lewiston, Minn.) — was not quite enough, as the Cardinals could not overcome a 14-point halftime deficit in falling to Hamline 94-78 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the SMU Gym.
Swiggum and Pederson did most of their offensive damage from the free throw line, as Pederson went 12-for-13 from the charity stripe, while Swiggum was 11 of 13. Swiggum and Burfeind each knocked down six field goals — Burfeind's on 11 attempts and Swiggum's on 15 chances — while Pederson went 5-for-8 from the field.
As a team, the Cardinals shot nearly 50 percent from the field, going 23-for-49, but more impressively, were 30-for-36 from the free throw line.
Unfortunately, as good as SMU, Hamline was even better, going 33-for-57 (58 percent) — including eight 3-pointers on 11 attempts — and went 20-for-29 from the free throw line. Tyler Pannell scored 20 points to lead four Pipers in double figures, with Noah Aguirre adding 16 and Dior Ford and Zach Moll adding 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Trailing by as many as 13 midway through the first half, SMU cut the Pipers' lead to six, 33-27, with four minutes remaining. Hamline, however, responded by ending the half on a 13-5 run to take a 14-point, 46-32, lead into the locker room at the break.
A 15-5 burst to start the second half push Hamline's advantage to 24, 61-37, and the Cardinals could not recover.
SMU is right back in action on Wednesday, when the Cardinals travel to Schoenecker Arena in St. Paul, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. MIAC game against league-leading and No. 1-ranked St. Thomas.
