MOORHEAD, Minn. — Michael Burfeind eclipsed the 20-point barrier for the fourth time in the last six games Monday, but the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team did not have an answer for Concordia's red-hot shooting from behind the arc, as the Cobbers drained nine 3-pointers — including eight in the first half — en route to a 93-72 MIAC victory Monday at Memorial Auditorium.

The Cardinals had the upper hand early, jumping out to an 18-13 lead in the game's opening seven minutes. A 7-0 run gave CC a 20-18 lead, but a Brian Thomas (Bellwood, Ill.) jumper knotted the game at 20-20 at the 11:03 mark. The game would remain tight, with CC grabbing a 30-28 advantage with six minutes remaining, but a 25-14 half-ending run pushed the Cobbers' advantage to 55-42 at the break.

Burfeind drained a jumper to open the second half, cutting the CC lead to 55-44, but the Cobbers answered with a 10-2 run to push their lead to 65-46, and the Cardinals never recovered.

Burfeind was a model of consistency for the Cardinals, scoring 11 points in the first half, and then adding 11 more over the game's final 20 minutes. The senior forward — who has now led the team in scoring in each of the eight games he's played this season — went 8-for-20 from the field, including one 3-pointer, and added a 5 of 6 effort from the free throw line.

Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) chipped in 15 points and added nine rebounds, missing his second collegiate double-double by one board, while Tom Gores (Rochester, Minn.) added 10 points.

Andrew Martinson came off the bench to score a team-best 19 points and lead five Cobbers in double figures. Ebo Nan-Kweson and Aaron Lindahl each finished with 16 points, while Dewon McKenzie tallied 12 and Jason Huus finished with 10 for Concordia, which pushed its winning streak to five straight.

The Cardinals are back in action, and back on the road, on Wednesday, as SMU heads to St. Paul, Minn., for a 7:30 p.m. conference matchup with Macalester.
