WEST SALEM, Wis. — With nine Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams competing — and the season-ending conference championships right around the corner — Saturday's UW-La Crosse Jim Drews and Tori Neubauer Invitational might just as well be renamed the MIAC Preview Invitational.

And if Saturday's action really was a preview of things to come in two weeks at the MIAC Championships at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn., it's no wonder Saint Mary's University cross country coach Ward Berndt has a smile on his face.

"This was a very good meet for us," Berndt said, after watching his Cardinal men place 23rd at the Jim Drews Invitational, while the SMU women finished 25th at the Tori Neubauer Invitational. "It's nice to see how we stack up against the rest of the conference — and with some many (MIAC) schools here, it really gave us a good indication of what to expect in a couple of weeks at the conference meet."

Katie Stolz (Forest Lake, Minn.) stole the show for the Cardinal women, as the junior clocked a school-record six-kilometer time of 23:25. Allie Theil (Burr Ridge, Ill.) added a time of 25:05, with Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Ill.) right behind at 25:09. Josie Moreno (Cicero, Ill.) and Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn.) rounded out the Cardinals' top five, stopping the clock in 25:13 and 25:14, respectively.

Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) once again led the way for the Cardinal men, cruising the eight-kilometer course in 26:29, while Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) chipped in a time of 27:42. Gabe Thiel (Berlin, Wis.) was the third Cardinal across the finish line, stopping the clock in 28:17, followed by John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 28:20), Jase Pater (Adrian, Minn. / 28:52), Sherman Moga (Shoreview, Minn. / 30:53) and Andy Meyer (Tucson, Ariz. / 31:40).

St. Olaf brought home the men's team title, beating runner-up UW-La Crosse by 55 points, while Central (Iowa), Iowa Central and Run n Fun rounded out the top five in the 30-team field. Iowa Central's Frankline Tonui won the men's individual title with a time of 24:29, edging Central's Austin O'Brien, who was second in 24:48.

On the women's side, Wartburg captured the team title with 81 points, nine better than the University of Minnesota. Iowa Central was third, followed by the University of Nebraska-Omaha and St. Olaf. Luther's Tricia Serres was the top female finisher, crossing the finish line in 21:19, with Wartburg's Sammi Bruett finishing second in 21:32.

The Cardinals are now off until Nov. 2, when they take part in the MIAC championships in St. Paul, Minn.
