ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University cross country teams had been preparing for Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships all season.
And the Cardinals certainly saved their best for last.
Katie Stoltz (Forest Lake, Minn.) and
Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) were the best of the best for the Cardinals, as the SMU juniors both earned All-MIAC honors in record-setting fashion — Stolz toured the six-kilometer Como Park women's course in a school-record time of 23:23 to finish 11th overall, while Haley collected his second straight all-conference showing with a school-record 8K time of 25:59 to place 13th overall.
"What a great day all the way around — but especially for Katie and Aaron," said SMU coach
Ward Berndt. "They both have been really coming on strong of late, and they put it all together at the perfect time."
Stolz, who had first etched her name in the record books just two weeks ago at the Tori Neubauer Invitational, helped fuel the Cardinals to an 11th-place finish Saturday afternoon. Carleton took home the women's team title, finishing with 51 points to outdistance runner-up St. Olaf. Saint Benedict was third, with Macalester and Gustavus rounding out the top five.
Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) was the second Cardinal woman across the finish line, clocking a time of 24:44. Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Ill.) and Josie Moreno (Cicero, Ill.) added times of 25:12 and 25:34, respectively, with Kristen Thelen (Rochester, Minn. / 25:52), Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa / 26:01) and Clare Siska (Rochester, Minn. / 26:09) rounding out the SMU lineup.
Haley's effort helped lead the Cardinal men to a ninth-place team finish. St. Olaf ran away with the men's team title, posting the top three individual finishes en route to a 61-point win over runner-up Carleton. St. Thomas, Saint John's and Hamline rounded out the top five.
Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill.) put together a solid showing in his first MIAC Championships, finishing second to Haley with a time of 27:13, while
Gabe Thiel (Berlin, Wis.) and
John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn.) added times of 28:11 and 28:24 respectively.
Jase Pater (Adrian, Minn. / 29:03),
Alex Davis (Champaign, Ill. / 29:14) and
Sherman Moga (Shoreview, Minn. / 29:26 rounded out the Cardinals' top seven.
The Cardinals are now off until Nov. 16, when they take part in the NCAA Central Regional.
