Complete All-MIAC Team
WINONA, Minn. — After collecting his first All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honor a year ago, Saint Mary's University's
Michael Burfeind (Lewiston, Minn.) entered his senior season with one question to be answered: What do you do for an encore?
How about score 350 points, average 15.9 points-per-game, net a single-game season-high 28 points, and eclipse the 1,000 career point mark?
Oh, and earn his second straight First-Team All-MIAC honor.
And Burfeind wasn't the only Cardinal honored by the MIAC when the conference released its post-season awards Wednesday. Along with Burfeind's First-Team All-MIAC selection, freshman
Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) was named to the MIAC's All-First-Year Team.
Burfeind closed out a stellar collegiate career averaging 15.9 ppg this season — the second straight season in which the senior post has led the team in scoring. Burfeind scored in double figures in 17 of his 22 games, including seven games of 20 or more points this season, and owned the team's top four single-game offensive performances — netting a season-high 28 points against Bethany Lutheran on Dec. 12, tallying 26 points against Crown (Dec. 18) and Bethel (Jan. 12), and scoring 24 vs. Concordia (Feb. 3).
With his 14th point in the first half against Saint John's on Feb. 3, Burfeind became the 25th player in program history to reach the 1,000 career point mark. Burfeind closed out his four-year career with 1,058 career points, ranking him No. 24 all-time, one point behind Nick Michaels '04.
While Burfeind was busy putting an exclamation point on his collegiate career, Swiggum was busy turning heads during his stellar first collegiate season.
Swiggum averaged 10.0 points-per-game and hauled in a team-best 178 rebounds (7.1 rpg) in his first season as a Cardinal. The freshman forward — the only SMU player to play all 25 games this season — scored in double figures 13 times, including a career-high 24 points against Augsburg on Jan. 19. Swiggum pulled down a game- and career-high 14 rebounds against Macalester on Feb. 6 and finished the season with a team-leading three double-doubles.
Bethel's Taylor Hall was named the Joe Hutton Player of the Year, while Concordia's Andrew Martinson earned the Sixth Man of the Year honor, and St. Thomas' John Tauer was selected MIAC Coach of the Year.
As part of the conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC also announced the seventh annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for men's basketball, which included SMU's
Josh Bennett (North St. Paul, Minn.).
