WINONA, Minn. — It was no secret heading into Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-opener against Augsburg — for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team to be successful, the Cardinals had to find a way to shut down the Auggies' Olivia Muyres.

After all, Muyres entered Wednesday's match up with the Cardinals having already scored nine goals in Augsburg's first seven games — including three multiple-goal outings.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals found out first-hand what the Auggies' first seven opponents already knew — Muyres is awfully tough to stop.

Muyres scored two goals, as the Auggies pushed their unbeaten streak to eight straight with a 4-1 conference win over the Cardinals Wednesday at Ochrymowycz Field.

Muyres got the Auggies on the board in the game's 23rd minute, beating SMU goalkeeper Miranda Halling (Rochester, Minn.) with the only goal of the first half.

Marie Fitzgerald pushed the Auggies' lead to 2-0, converting a tic-tac-toe passing combination with Muyres and Morgan Kenny three minutes into the second half.

Muyres and Fitzgerald would add their second goals of the game six minutes apart midway through the second stanza to push Augsburg's lead to 4-0.

Bethany Schmidt (Sparta, Wis.) got the Cardinals on the board in the 89th minute, as the SMU senior netted her first of the season and third of her career, off an assist from Kelli Harstad (Hampton, Minn.)

The Auggies kept Halling busy, as the Cardinals' junior goalkeeper stopped a season-high 12 shots — four shy of her collegiate high.

Saint Mary's — making its home debut against the Auggies — is back on its home turf on Saturday, as the Cardinals host Carleton in a 1 p.m. conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
