WINONA, Minn. — They couldn't repeat as team champions, but Aaron Haley (Plainview, Minn.) made sure that he was the first runner to cross the finish line for the second year in a row.

Haley clocked an eight-kilometer time of 27:18 to blow away the rest of the field in defending his individual title at Friday's Saint Mary's University No-Limit Invitational Friday.

Fueled by Haley's first-place effort, the Cardinal men earned a third-place team finish, totaling 84 points. UW-La Crosse took home the men's team title with 28 points, while UW-Eau Claire was second with 56. Winona State (85) and Martin Luther (138) rounded out the men's field.

Allie Thiel (Burr Ridge, Ill.) led the way for the SMU women, posting a fifth-place showing of 25:10 across the 6K course to help the Cardinals to a fourth-place team showing. UW-Eau Claire — fueled by a 1-2-3 individual finish — ran away with the team title with 22 points, well in front of runner-up UW-La Crosse (57). Winona State was third (85), followed by Saint Mary's (86) and Martin Luther (132).

Along with Haley's second straight individual title, the Cardinal men also got a 16th-place effort by Jase Pater (Adrian, Minn.), who stopped the clock in 28:59), while John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 29:50), Gabe Thiel (Berlin, Wis. / 29:57) and Jovan Newsum (Glendale Heights, Ill. / 30:21) rounded out the Cardinals' top five.

On the women's side, Chelsea Tremblay (Hayward, Wis.) was the second Cardinal across the finish line, posting a time of 25:34), with Bridget Hayes (Chicago, Ill. / 26:07), Amy Spitzmueller (New Brighton, Minn. / 26:26) and Josie Moreno (Cicero, Ill. / 26:27) rounding out SMU's top five.

The Cardinals are back in action next Friday, traveling to Eau Claire, Wis., to take part in the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.
