COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Now that's more like it.
After struggling through the opening round of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota golf teams turned up the heat a bit during Sunday's second round of the 54-hole tournament.
And no one was hotter than Connor Brandt.
Brandt, who slumped to an opening 94, whittled 17 strokes—yes, 17—carding a five-over-par 77 to lead the Cardinal men to a 322 Day 2 score.
Blake Westerberg followed up his opening-round 79 with a 78 Sunday for a team-best 157 total. Brett Jackson fired an 82 Sunday to go with his Day 1 90 for a 172 total, while Hunter Rau (87-87—174) and Hudson Stensgard (89-85—174) rounded out the Cardinal lineup.
And the stroke-shaving wasn't exclusively reserved for the Cardinal men, as the Saint Mary's women also got into the act.
Haley Jung carded a career-low round of 89-two shots better than her previous low of 91, recorded in Saturday's opening round.
Kailyn Kling equaled Jung's effort with a career-best round of her own, matching her teammate's 89 to go with her first-day 93.
Kelsey Stenzel knocked five shots off her opening round 95 for a two-day 185 total, with
Madison Gately (93-96—189) and
Jennie Marx (100-92—192) completing the Saint Mary's line-up.
With Jung and Kling leading the way, the Cardinal women put together a second-round team score of 360, 12 shots lower than Saturday's opening round.
The Cardinals close out the three-day tournament on Monday.
