WINONA, Minn. — When you're hot, you're hot.
And to say Augsburg was hot in the opening 20 minutes of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team would be an understatement.
No matter what the Cardinals tried, they could not stop the hot-handed Auggies.
Augsburg shot 71 percent from the field in the game's opening 20 minutes to open a 54-27 advantage, and SMU never recovered, as Augsburg handed the Cardinals a 91-69 conference setback at the SMU Gym.
The Auggies, behind Andy Seidlitz and Dan Kornbaum, missed just nine of their 32 first-half field goal attempts — including a 5-for-9 effort from behind the 3-point line, in racing to their 27-point halftime advantage.
Augsburg "cooled off" in the second half, hitting on just 42 percent of its field goals (14-for-27) — and were just 1 of 6 from behind the arc.
The Cardinals, who boasted four players in double figures, outscored the Auggies 42-37 over the game's final 20 minutes, but it was not enough to dig them out of their halftime hole.
Evan Pederson (Onalaska, Wis.) scored a team-best 15 points — going 5-for-13 with three 3-pointers — while
Will Swiggum (St. Charles, Minn.) and
Wylie Ferron (Waconia, Minn.) each added 13 points and
Johnny Spillane (West St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in 11.
Kornbaum and Seidlitz led the way for the Auggies, tossing in 30 and 23 points, respectively, with Kornbaum also hauling in 10 rebounds.
