LAKE CITY, Minn. —
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) and
Kaitlin Kling (LeRoy, Minn.) have been sharing the medalist duties—with career-best performances—for the Saint Mary's University women's golf team this season.
During the second round of the Wartburg Invitational last weekend, Kling carded a team-best 88 to lead Saint Mary's to a 16th-place finish.
Saturday afternoon, it was Gately's turn to take center stage, equaling Kling's career-best showing with her best round as a Cardinal, shooting an 88 during the opening round of the Division III Classic at The Jewel.
And on Sunday, Kling regained Saint Mary's top spot, whittling three strokes off her career-best showing, shooting an 85 to lead the Cardinals to a 15th place finish in their final tune-up before the regular-season ending conference championships.
Carleton brought home the tea title, shooting a 628 to earn a 10-shot victory over runner-up St. Thomas. Saint Benedict (639), Wartburg (645) and UW-Eau Claire (648) rounded out the tournament's top five.
Kling rebounded from an opening-round 97 with her second-day 85, while Gaetely shot a second-day 94 to go with her Day 1 88 and shared the team lead with Kling with 36-hole 182s.
Kelsey Stenzel (Wabasha, Minn.) added a 197 (98-99), with
Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn. / 100-112—212) and
Kortney Wobbe (Wabasha, Minn. / 128-130) rounding out the Saint Mary's lineup.
Grace Gilmore of Carleton earned medalist honors with a seven-over-par 151 (75-76), while Saint Benedict's Bridget Cummings (78-78—156) and Lauren Wise (78-78—156) shared second and Kate Engler of UW-Eau Claire (79-78—157) and St. Thomas' Emily Thul (77-80—157) rounded out the top five.
The Cardinals are now off until Oct. 4-5-6, when they travel to Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn., for the 54-hole season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
