Familiar faces lead the way for Cardinals

ST. PETER, Minn. — After a pair of invitationals that feature mostly fellow Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents, the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams squared off against a few unfamiliar foes at the Gustavus Grace Goblirsh Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Fortunately for Saint Mary's coach Amber Bartholomew, there may have been unfamiliar foes—but there were plenty of familiar faces leading the Cardinals to sixth-place team finishes.

Shelby Peterson (St. Paul, Minn.) and Ailie Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) made their presence felt in the diving competition, as Peterson placed third in the three-meter (153.35) and sixth in the one-meter (154.55), while Davidson was fourth in both the one-meter (170.00) and three-meter (152.85).

Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) chipped in an eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.46), and Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) recorded 11th-place efforts in both the 100 (1:15.87) and 200 (2:44.29) breaststrokes.

On the men's side, Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) and Lucas Rukavina (Winona, Minn.) were once again busy in the pool. Tonda placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.69), 10th in the 200 backstroke (1:00.80), and 12th in the 400 IM (4:52.99), while Rukavina was ninth in both the 200 freestyle (1:53.88) and 500 freestyle (5:20.27), and added a 12th in the 200 butterfly (2:22.55).

Brian Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) swam to a 10th in the 200 breaststroke (2:39.58), and joined Tonda, Rukavina, and P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) to post a ninth in the 200 medley relay.

The Cardinals are now off until Dec. 5-6, when they head to Minneapolis, Minn., to take part in the two-day, University of Minnesota Jean Freeman Invitational.
