LAKE CITY, Minn. —
Madison Gately (Glenview, Ill.) and
Haley Jung (Monticello, Minn.) led the way for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's golf team in its season-opening effort Tuesday afternoon.
Gately's 88 and Jung's 89, however, were not enough to carry the Cardinals past Macalester, as the Scots dealt Saint Mary's a 346-392 setback in the Mac/Mary Dual at The Jewel.
"We saw some very solid performances for a first match," said Saint Mary's coach
Greg Moore. "It's definitely a good measuring stick for us—we still have some work to do, but I was pleased with the effort for a first time out."
Along with Gately's team-best 88 and Jung's 89, the Cardinals also got a 102 from
Paula Avila (Weslaco, Texas), a 113 by
Michaela Heuckendorf (Plymouth, Minn.), and a 120 from
Emily Vlahos (Orland Park, Ill.).
Macalester's Jessica Yost earned medalist honors, carding an 81.
The Cardinals are back in action this Saturday and Sunday, heading to Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell, Minn., to take part in the 36-hole Saint Benedict Invitational.
