GameDay Preview
ST. PAUL, Minn. — It's been two weeks since the Saint Mary's University swimming and diving teams had been in the pool in against an opponent other than themselves.
And the Cardinals certainly showed no signs of rust at Saturday's Hamline Invitational.
Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.) and
Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.) each posted three top-10 finishes to lead the Cardinal women to a fourth-place finish, while Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) notched three fourth-place showings and a fifth-place effort to pace the Saint Mary's men's fourth-place team finish.
VanBeest recorded the Cardinals' top individual finish, placing second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.69—touching the wall just ahead of teammate
Kizzy Bell (St. Paul, Minn.), who stopped the clock in 1:13.44. VanBeest also added a sixth-place time of 2:32.47 in the 200 IM—again out-touching Bell (2:32.91)—and a ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:12.18). Galewski notched a third-place time of 1:06.60 in the 100 butterfly, while also placing fourth in the 1,000 freestyle (12:31.48) and eighth in the 500 freestyle (6:09.41).
Chloe Morrison (Ashkum, Ill.) added a seventh-place time of 13:12.60 in the 1,000 freestyle, with
Ailie Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) placing fifth in the three-meter diving competition (153.40) and sixth (160.05) in the one-meter diving, and
Shelby Peterson (St. Paul, Minn.) chipping in a sixth in the three-meter (150.35).
Tonda was the top men's performer for the second meet in a row, placing fourth in both the 100 backstroke (59.77) and 200 IM (2:09.84), while also adding a fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.26). Matt Clayton (Forest Lake, Minn.) stopped the clock in 1:04.31 to finish second in the 100 breaststroke, and added a 2:14.77 in placing fifth in the 200 IM. Lucas Gerads (St. Cloud, Minn.) also had a pair of top-10 showings, posting times of 57.40 and 5:35.86 to finish sixth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 500 freestyle.
The Cardinals return to St. Paul, Minn., next Saturday, taking part in Macalester's Roger Ahlman Invitational.
