Saint Mary's GameDay PreviewMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — There's something about the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center that brings out the best in Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's
Grace VanBeest (Flossmoor, Ill.).
The Cardinal junior—who broke a pair of school records the last time Saint Mary's competed at the Gophers' facility in December—was at it again on Friday.
VanBeest broke her own school record in the 100 breaststroke during the second day of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships—twice.
The Cardinal junior kicked off her day by touching the wall in 1:09.30 in the prelims, narrowly beating her old mark of 1:09.39.
Not only did the effort etch her name into the record books—for a couple hours anyway—but it also earned VanBeest a spot in Friday evening's consolation final, where she took nearly another minute off that school mark, posting a 10
th-place time of 1:08.37.
And the record-setting continued for VanBeest, as she teamed with
Reese Galewski (Winona, Minn.),
Christina Weldai (London, England), and
Caroline Hoffman (Chicago, Ill.) to smash the school-mark in the 200 medley relay, knocking two seconds off the hold mark with a time of 1:55.38 to finish eighth.
VanBeest wasn't the only Cardinal getting in a little extra work Friday evening, as Galewski—who swam a 1:01.61 in the prelims of the 100 butterfly—also earned a spot in the consolation finals, where she finished 14
th with a time of 1:01.61.
In the three-meter diving competition,
Kierra Walske (Rochester, Minn.) placed 13 with a score of 254.85, while
Shelby Peterson (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Ailie Davidson (Duluth, Minn.) added scores of 245.90 and 217.30 to finish 16
th and 19
th, respectively.
Weldai and Hoffman also competed in Friday's prelims, with Weldai clocking a time of 2:11.29 in the 200 freestyle, while Hoffman added a 1:19.78 in the 100 breaststroke.
Lucas Gerads (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Joe Tonda (St. Paul, Minn.) enjoyed their second straight stellar days in the pool for the Cardinal men, putting together 18
th- and 19
th-place finishes, respectively. Gerads recorded a time of 56.11 to place 18
th in the 100 butterfly, while Tonda stopped the clock in 1:02.70 to finish 19
th in the 100 breaststroke with a tie of 1:02.70.
P.J. Heller (St. Cloud, Minn.) shaved eight seconds off his season-best time in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:51.92, while Sean Ross (Palos Park, Ill. / 100 butterfly, 57.78), Nick Sawchuk (Rochester, Minn. / 200 freestyle, 2:02.01), and Andrew Eggersgluss (Mound, Minn. / 100 backstroke, 1:01.28) also competed for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are right back in the pool on Saturday for the third day of the MIAC Championships, with prelims starting at 10:30 a.m.
